Write Your Press Releases for Online Delivery Channels
Online distribution points like search engines have screening programs in place that filter out content that doesn't look like a press release. Here are a few of the guidelines these channels use:
- Headline length should be neither too long nor too short. Eighty characters is a happy medium to strive for.
- Sentence fragments in the body of the release may cause your release to be rejected. Such fragments include paragraph headers and bulleted lists.
- Old dates in your release will likely make the content look stale. Including a phrase like "doing business since January of 1970" in your opening paragraph may cause your release to get stuck.
- Length of your release should ideally be between 300 and 800 words.
- Links used in your release should be limited. If you use too many links within the body of your release, this may be detected as a form of "link spamming" by search engines.
