The Food Lion supermarket chain operates 490 stores in North Carolina, and last month it showed its home state colors with a two-week promotional campaign titled "Got to
be NC Products." The endeavor provided in-store sampling of North Carolina-grown foods, special product displays and signage calling attention to North Carolina-based products on
store shelves. The supermarket also produced a free booklet highlighting the state's food companies and its farmers, complete with coupons to encourage purchasing of state-based
merchandise and recipes on how to prepare these goodies for dinner. Absent from the promotion was mention of Belgian waffles, which might be closer to the hearts and tummies of
the chain's C-suite - Food Lion is a subsidiary of Delhaize Group, based in Brussels.
