On the Record?

So how many times have you been counseled not to trust a reporter who swears your conversation is off the record? Allow us to make an example of Rich Jaroslovsky, managing editor of the Wall Street
Journal's interactive edition. During the Media Relations 2000 conference in New York on June 6, Jaroslovsky told a room full of 500+ people that he considers Nielsen's and Media Metrix's systems for
gauging Web traffic to be flawed. And he went on to suggest that there is a conspiracy of silence among publishers who want to keep this measurement Achilles heel from getting out in the open. "But let's
just keep that comment between us," he told attendees. We know, Rich - you were only kidding. There's no such thing as "off the record."
