On Measurement: Employee Relations

Petra Fioravanti, vice president of communications and public affairs for Discovery Networks International, recognizes that workers at large media corporations like hers are
jittery in the wake of mass layoffs at CNN, Fox News Corp., and CNET (PRN March 26.)"It's more important than ever to use the free flow of information to empower employees
with your mission," she says.

When the company recently brought together 450 employees from around the world, Fioravanti used interactive technology to gauge employee satisfaction. After entering basic
information (jobs, age, gender) into wireless devices, attendees responded to a few dozen multiple-choice questions about the overall direction and status of the company. Results
were posted on a giant screen as graph charts. Fioravanti says the technology, provided by the Minneapolis-based Express Interactive Solutions, wowed attendees. "We're getting
people to give feedback instantly, giving us a much deeper understanding of our own internal PR." (Petra Fioravanti, 240/662-5900)
