TV Newsrooms Up Their Staffs

More than three out of four TV newsrooms increased their staffs in 1996, according to the News/Broadcast Network Inc., a public relations services company which has satellite windows to radio and TV stations and serves professionals throughout the United states.

Of an average-sized newsroom of 37 people, 76.9 percent reported their news operations were larger this year. The survey also found that a majority of TV newsrooms reported that 1997 will lead to staff surges. (NBN, 630/963-4455)

New Technologies Are Driving Marketing

New technologies are resulting in stiffer competition for the lion's share of the public relations audience but researching is giving companies insight into ways of targeting that audience, according to a recently released survey of marketing and public relations professionals in Southwestern Wisconsin.

The Market Research Survey Results report, which was conducted by Remsik-Mueller & Associates Inc. in Milwaukee, Wisc., shows how emerging technologies are giving businesses new avenues to promote their products.

More than two-thirds of those surveyed use research to help in establishing goals, tracking their markets and launching new programs, products or services. (Remsik-Mueller, 414/390-5500)

Public Affairs Council's Board Installs Hogans

The Public Affairs Council's board of directors installed Mack L. Hogans as chairman at an Oct. 21 meeting in Colorado Springs. Hogans is senior vice president for corporate affairs at Weyerhaeuser Company in Tacoma, Wash., and succeeds James W. Hart Jr. (Public Affairs Council, 202/872-1790)

began its 26th year in October with its election of officers. IABC Seeks Practitioners for Research Competition

Public relations and communication management papers, based on research that can be applied in the workforce, are being sought by the International Association of Business Communicators Research Foundation for its research paper competition. The competition --which focuses on papers that cover communication management, business communications and public relations --can be based on methodologies that range from qualitative to legal. Top papers will be selected during IABC's 1997 international conference, in Los Angeles, slated for June 8-11. The deadline is March 1. (IABC, 415/433-3400)

The latest issue of CommCore Communication Strategies' newsletter, "Point to Point," highlights techniques for companies seeking global expansions; sales tactics that bridge gaps between clients and prospects; and guidelines on how to conduct a satellite media tour.

The key, according to CCS President Karen Berg, is to deviate from typically used techniques to employ tactics that end in mutually profitable alliances -- for instance, satellite tours which relay a message without requiring that an executive boards a plane to visit your office.
