Editor's Note: Even though a large percentage of the content at http://www.nytimes.com mirrors what's in the print version, the Web site also boosts its own business venture: CyberTimes. Although there isn't a large in-house staff, several editors and about eight freelancers put together pieces for the 24-hour operation and CyberTimes' content is exclusive and original - and cutting-edge to boot! All CyberTimes pitches should go to [email protected] or to the individual columnists.

CyberTimes

The copy here is all about the Web or Internet- or computer-related technology. Some stories in the hopper last week were a cheeky column about customer-support services and the Anti-Defamation League's position about the increasing number of "hate" Web sites.

Much of the CyberTimes copy is penned by freelancers.

This is another one of those news operations that's not tethered to any specific hours or deadlines since news is constantly being churned out to be placed on the site. More than 10 CyberTimes stories go up every day and if the concept or topic's not new (meaning it's been farmed out by editorial staffers on the print side), the way it's approached - and the way it's packaged - is. These editors and columnists want e-mail releases and story pitches and ideas and absolutely abhore faxes: we were told they don't even look at them. But every e-mail pitch sent to CyberTimes is scanned by several pairs of eyes. Don't place cold-call pitches or follow up your suggestion with a call to see if they got it (you'll receive an e-mail message that informs you that cybertimes@nytimes has received your message.) Leave the volley up to them We were told by Fixmer's assistant - who forwards each e-mail suggestion to each editor or columnist - that the biggest mistake PR pros make is, "They don't make an effort to customize the information they send us. If it's only germane for the mass market, it's likely to fall through the cracks." CyberTimes receives more than 200 pitches or releases a week and less than 10 percent warrant gathering more specifics or materialize into an online article. Before you hit the send key, do a search-engine probe to determine if the CyberTimes has already covered your peach of an idea.
