Editor's Note: Forgive the New York stereotype, but we expected these New York newshounds to be a little more on the aloof side and we were pleasantly surprised that they weren't. Still, time is a luxury at this operation and swiftness and brevity (in written form, too) count for everything. We had to call back several times to get access to the editors we spoke with and the conversations were lightening-fast.

Metro News. You guessed right if you concluded that happenings in and around Southern New York (also, northern New Jersey and southwestern Connecticut) provide the who, what, where, when and how for many Metro Section stories. But news from all geographic niches and with a variety of angles can entice these hunters of content. This section also churns out its fair share of long-term projects: one recent "Pulse of New York" series featured the essence of life in New York. |

You would be hard-pressed to find any truly convenient time to approach these editors but generally afternoons should be avoided. The likelihood that you'll catch one of these editors on the phone your first (or second) go-around is a long shot. |
Send Richardson faxes several days ahead of time and resort to a call only if it's necessary. Don't rely on snail mail or e-mail and don't expect that these editors, reporters and support staff are going to give your idea a lot of time or attention. You absolutely must grab their attention in the first few seconds they look at your release or hear your story idea. (If you don't send a pitch to the right person, it's rare that editors will pass one on: they get many that are misdirected and it's time- consuming to re-route them.) |
"My best advice is that you send it to someone [versus a job title] and that there's a name attached to it," Richardson says. "It helps if you're a former newsperson and you can put a slant on something that makes it interesting to a specific reporter or editor." |
Features. News includes entertainment, travel, lifestyle and TV and most of the ideas are generated in-house. Of the several hundred faxes sent to these editorial trend setters, 95 percent are tossed. Content often has to be as scintillating as the Jackie O auction at Sotheby's. |
Features Deputy Managing Editor, Larry Hackett, Fax: 212/210-2203 |
An easy day? There's no such thing. We placed about a dozen calls and our tips from the Daily News folks were still sparse. We were promised a return call we never got; left voicemails that weren't returned; and had to try several editors three or four times to get mere snippets of advice. |
Don't e-mail (there's no such thing as a central electronic address) and don't call! Faxes are the way to go and feature news should be sent directly to the editors or beat reporters listed below with a lead time of several weeks. |
As sure as we are that the sun's going to come up tomorrow, we're equally as sure that you're not going to get Hackett on the phone: he's got one of the toughest gatekeepers (15 years in the biz) we've come across, but also one of the most helpful. Pitches that come Hackett's way should be extra special - i.e., the Versace exhibit at the Met. |
