New Players on the Public Affairs Scene

Public affairs, often more closely aligned with lobbying than public relations, is sure to present a milieu of opportunities for newcomers recruited from the government arena.

New on the PA Scene:

  • Former Minnesota Attorney General Hubert H. "Skip" Humphrey III who sealed a deal to consult Minnesota-based Tunheim Santrizos;
  • The National Education Association brings on board Becky Fleischauer, former TV journalist and press secretary for U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.);
  • Fleishman-Hillard recruits Sal Russo, a political strategist who worked on campaigns for Ronald Reagan and Jack Kemp (FH's the agency which won the coveted $9.4 million contract awarded by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy); and

Columbus-based HMS Success Public Relations, which is nearing $2 million in annual billings via the efforts of its a dozen employees, hired Curt Steiner, former director of communications for Ohio Gov. George Voinovich. "Understanding the process is as important as understanding the issues - especially in an era of term limits," says Steiner. "Members change and we are the ones who follow that for our clients."
