CompuServe, Columbus, Ohio, and its PR agency, Porter/Novelli, New York, decided that the best way to generate hype in the months leading up to the March 13, 1996 launch was by releasing the results of a study showing the need for a consumer product like WOW! in the market, and keeping quiet about the flat monthly rate and layout and design.
