Targeting the sports arena? If so, the biggest bang for your
buck will probably come from hitting the greens.
While the fan bases for the National Basketball
Association (NBA) and Major League Baseball (MLB) tend
to be more regional - people who live in the West just love their
hoops while pro baseball has more mass appeal in the Northeast and
Midwest - golf seems to be the true national pastime, as its
popularity stretches from New York to California (along with
several major hubs in between).
The top three markets (overall) for people who have hit the
links at least three times in the last year are, well, the top
three markets (see charts). No surprise there.
But for campaigns (or clients) with a strong hook for golfing
and/or golfers, you might want to hit more second- and third-tier
markets, like Salt Lake City and Des Moines, Iowa.
While not as sexy, say, as New York City or L.A., these markets
own the highest concentration of golfers compared with the overall
population.
