With the travel season in full swing, we thought it would be
useful to track the top 10 national newspapers among people who are
planning to travel overseas this year. Little shock that daily
newspapers in four of the nation's major travel hubs - Boston, Los
Angeles, New York and San Francisco - have some of the highest
numbers of readers who will be venturing outside of the U.S.
Yet the table also shows how different consumer behavior can be
even among the closest of neighbors, no small thing when you're
executing a PR campaign and seeking that ever- elusive ROI.
Take the Miami Herald; more than a third of its readers are
planning to travel overseas this year. But Palm Beach Post readers,
who are just a few miles away from downtown Miami, are inclined to
stay closer to home. (With Palm Beach being just this side of
Shangri la, wouldn't you?)
It is somewhat surprising that San Jose -- not exactly in league
with San Francisco and New York demographics-wise -- had a decent
number of people planning to travel outside of the U.S. Among the
top 10, the Ann Arbor News, out of Michigan, had the lowest number
of readers traveling internationally this year.
