Poor Jack Nicholson. Well, not exactly Jack, but his beloved Los
Angeles Lakers, who are missing the NBA playoffs--which tip
off this Saturday (April 23)--for the first time since the 1993-94
campaign. But Jack isn't the only bummed-out basketball fan in
L.A., which is the No. 1 market (per Delahaye) for people
who follow hoops on TV and/or radio. New York City, considered a
major hub for hoops connoisseurs, comes in at No. 2, despite the
fact that basketball fans in the Big Apple haven't had much to
cheer about this season.
Along with several other top markets, L.A. can be a solid
vehicle for PR execs who have a message that might resonate with a
sports crowd a la banners, sponsorships and/or tie-ins.
However, for more captive audiences, you might want to court
some of the smaller, albeit playoff-bound, markets like Sacramento,
San Antonio, and Indianapolis. Lexington, Ky., the No. 1 market for
basketball (indexed), is probably more of a reflection of the
fanaticism for the Louisville Cardinals Men's College
Basketball team, which recently lost to Illinois in the NCAA Final
Four.
