It's been a seemingly interminable winter for many parts of the country, what with still having to put your mittens on in mid- to late April but, pretty soon, folks will shed
their layers of clothing and get into the swing of summer activities.
With that in mind, this week, per Bacon's Information, we provide the Top 10 gardening magazines as well as the Top 10 publications in the outdoor/camping markets.
Although it's forgivable to think the entire magazine universe is located within a 15-block radius in midtown Manhattan - where all of the large group publishers reside a la
Condé Nast, Hearst Magazines and Time Inc. - PR folk should set their media radar beyond the Big Apple when it comes to cultivating magazines with an
outdoorsy bent (and fat circulations).
The top two gardening books, for example - Birds & Blooms and Backyard Living - are properties of Reiman Media Group (Greendale, Wisc.) while
Outside (second among the most highly circulated outdoor/camping titles) is part of Mariah Media (Santa Fe, N.M.).
Better Homes & Gardens Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living is located in Des Moines, Iowa, the home office of consumer publisher Meredith Corporation, which
produces the domestic granddaddy Better Homes & Gardens (7.6 million-circ) and which has a large presence in New York.
But the roots among the big magazine publishers run both ways: Southern Living Garden Guide (No. 9 in the Top 10 gardening magazines) is published by Southern
Progress Corp. (Birmingham, Ala.), which is part of the Time Inc. portfolio.
