Editor's Note: Wired News (http://www.wired.com), is the hourly-updated news site from the Wired family. It is unlike its sister site, http://www.hotwired.com, which provides analysis-based and community-oriented content. Both sites do not think of themselves as press-release or pitch-driven, so pitching them is going to be tough.

News and Politics: Wired News covers a variety of policies, from Net taxations to export matters as well as freedom-of-speech and censorship issues. News Editor: Dan Brekke Phone: 415/276-8405 Fax: 415/276-5150 Email: [email protected]

There are many deadlines throughout the day so the brief window immediately after a deadline is a good time to reach Brekke (after 8 a.m., 11 a.m and 2 p.m. Western time). He can't, however, guarantee how much time he will have to spend to speak to you - so make it brief. With a limited amount of down time, Brekke says he finds it hard to entertain a cold call. He prefers an initial e-mail exchange as an "ice-breaker" before phoning him. Please don't spin anything - just give him the facts. He needs to know what the story is and determine right there and then if it is worthwhile. His advice: (1) understand Wired News' content and (2) be able to put a product or service into some kind of context; don't just tell him about some great machine, tell him why it's great and how it stacks ups to its competitors.
Technology: New technology, developments in emerging markets, new sites and tools are some of the things you'll find in this section. Technology Editor Tim Barkow Phone: 415/276-8501 Fax: 415/276-5150 Email: [email protected] Mornings are best for Barkow because they are before, not between, his daily deadlines. No days are better or worse than others. Barkow discourages phone calls because of lack of time. He prefers e-mail. Barkow is not interested in upgrades and personnel changes, nor does he have time for meetings. He is looking for new technologies and significant developments in emerging markets. He realizes this is high-tech stuff so when approaching him, be sure to provide background material so he can ask questions.
Culture: Online games, electronic art and music conventions are a sample of some of the daily coverage in Wired News culture.

Culture Editor John Alderman Phone: 415/276-8462 Fax: 415/276-5150 Email: [email protected]

Since Alderman strongly prefers e-mail, there are no bad times. No calls please. Alderman prefers e-mail so he can respond at his leisure. Snail mail him a press release if there is not a sense of urgency to it, otherwise, fax it or email him. Since Wired News focuses on news stories, it doesn't do a lot of product reviews. He advises PR people who pitch new games or products to keep abreast of what's going on behind the scenes (trends, issues) so it can be framed in the big picture.
