Media Insight: Radio Voyager Network

199 S. Cayuga St., Ithaca, NY 14850

"To serve the interest of society" is the mission of the upcoming radio program, Radio Voyager Network. Launching Oct. 5,1998, it will be the world's first commercial global radio network that will air simultaneously in Europe and the U.S. The 24-hour music, entertainment and solution-oriented network, a product of Finger Lakes Productions, has many opportunities for those in PR to give their own ideas on issues like the environment, women's health, technology or race relations. (Target audience: 18-to-39-year-olds)

SECTIONS: Consisting of "information bursts," this section will provide 96 slots for information on topics such as new technology, women's health, education or anything that parallel's the network's goal of serving societal interests.

The "bursts" will be repeated four times daily at six hour intervals to serve the international audience. Each burst will be one minute.

This section is optimum for PR folks to get their ideas about the above topics covered on the show. Each "burst" will be generated with an editorial partner that lends authority to the topic, such as a nonprofit, civic institution or educational organization.

EDITOR/LEAD TIME: Executive Managing Editor, Cynthia Berger

Has been with Finger Lakes Productions for seven months in her current position. Previously was the Program Manager for The Ocean Report.

Before coming to Finger Lakes Productions, Berger served as the managing editor for Living Bird magazine at Cornell University.

Fax: 607/277-0961, Phone: 607/275-9400

Lead Time: four weeks

METHODS: Since the network will not be airing until Oct. 5, Berger pleads to not be inundated with calls or faxes until the show begins.

She accepts calls, but also likes email at [email protected].

In addition to the information bursts, the network will produce shows such as "EnvironMinute" and "Animal Instinct." For these shows, Berger wants ideas sent to individual program managers (listed below).

She stresses that all ideas should be global-minded since listeners will be from around the world.

COMMENTS: The staff is very easy to work with and is open to creative ideas for the launch of the network. They are also interested in editorial partners who will give advice to the information bursts aired.

Editorial partners will approve each script before it goes on air. For example, the Environmental Health Center is an editorial partner for the environmental bursts.

RVN also will offer sponsorship opportunities for corporations who have an interest in promoting their business to audiences worldwide.
