Editor's Note: The kids market has really taken off so there are countless ways you can try to get a plug or attention for your clothing, gaming, entertainment, vacation, beverage and food company if you take the time to tune into the approximate 30 stations that feature Radio Aahs programming (see list below). We encourage you to treat this with a little more humor and risk than you would a traditional pitch.

What's Up With Evan Roberts? Aahs considers this 7 p.m. (central time) program, hosted by 14-year-old Evan Roberts, "wacky and off- the wall" and there are a wide scope of topics that are covered, including sports, music, games and computer-related products. Recent coverage has included marking Oreo's 50th birthday and a salute to the new female Ninja Turtle characer. |
Show Producer: Angel Rosas Phone: 612/925-8847 Fax: 612/926-8014 |
Rosas works a Wednesday-Saturday shift from the afternoon to the evening; she wants story ideas and releases to come her way during that span. |
No kidding around, just like the many other producers and editors we've chatted with, Rosas wants paper in hand, preferrably by fax, to mull over an idea. She, however, doesn't mind a well-intentioned phone call - don't forget to do your homework and listen to the show before you deliver your monologue! |
Rosas says the biggest pitch mistake people make is forgetting to think like a kid when deciding if the story or idea has merit. There is a little leeway here since a lot of whether they take your idea seriously or not does rest in your style: "For instance," Rosas says, "we're not interested in 'fat-free and healthy eating for the family' but we might be interested in 'fat-free and fun frozen desserts for kids.' " |
SFX This is the irreverent science show that dabbles in a pool of kids-related stuff and gear. The show, which airs on Saturday at 1 p.m. (EST) generally has a loosely woven theme that runs throughout the program and provides an opportune way for companies to get brand recognition with free giveaways. |
Producer: Dan Turner Phone: 201/333-6662 Fax: 201/333-5853 |
Turner works a 6:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., so pitch during those hours. Friday's his heaviest day and Mondays and Tuesdays are the lightest. |
Turner's prized advice? Faxes are his No.1 choice: "I'd rather follow up if there's merit," he says. |
Turner points out that PR folks shouldn't rely on just pitching new products and services; they need to work at establishing a reciprocal relationship with him - a connection that starts with an introductory call and a sense of how your knowledge is added value for him. Don't just blitz (or nag) him when you have a new campaign and then leave him alone until it benefits you again to court him. |
