Close to 1 million people read Newsday every day for both business and lifestyle-tinged buzz. But even though this media outlet is based on Long Island, its editorial reach extends beyond - including business news affecting New Yorkers at large and nationally breaking news. New York is arguably one of the most competitive news environments in the world so if you pitch them an idea that doesn't fit their edgy style, rejection will be quick.

Business
Expect the typical: Wall Street, banking and M&As. But coverage also includes niche and tumultuous markets like telecom-munications and biomedicine. About 20 percent of what's published is national news. The paper also exhibits a heavy bent towards regional/local stories.
Business Editor Steve Sink Fax: 516/843-5459 (Note: A small editorial staff is in the city, including a new media reporter in Manhattan; 212/696-0396.)

Business deadlines vary because of several sections, but Fridays are definitely the slowest, and Mondays and Tuesdays the busiest.

The majority of pitches are faxed and that's how Sink prefers it. "[With the exception of mega businesses like Microsoft], don't fax me your company's earnings if it's in California," Sink warns. "What I would tell PR people is: number one, read the paper and they should know by deduction what we don't do - and don't send us the fluffy stuff. And I would urge them to make sure their clients are accessible and forthright," says Sink.

Health, Science & Technology
Newsday features about 12 to 14 pages for this genre of news every week, including its Health and Discovery section on Tuesday. Relevant topics include medical breakthroughs and new medications/ treatments for diseases. A six-page-plus Plugged-In technology section comes out on Wednesday. It's targeted for the consumer and features tutorial-flavored stories; columns; kids and computers; software/hardware cyber culture; and ISPs.
Health, Science & Technology Editor Reg Gale Deputy Science Editor Marci Kemen E-mail is preferred and is triaged by Gale or Kemen. Send pitches to: [email protected] or [email protected] Because of staggered deadlines, it's impossible to peg when it's not hectic on the news side.

E-mail's the way to go. "I discourage long discussions over the phone - give us an idea in a letter or e-mail," says Gale.

"What you have to remember about Newsday is that most of our reporting ideas come from our staff and regular freelancers," adds Gale. "Capturing our attention isn't easy." Your best bet to establish a rapport with these editors and reporters is following their coverage over a span of time and discovering ways that you can interject something new into an issue or topic.
