Media Insight: Money Magazine

Money MagazineTime/Life Bldg.-Rockefeller Center

Editor's Note: With a circulation of around 2 million, Money magazine is worth establishing a rapport with because of the number of consumers you can reach. But this is an extremely tough magazine to pitch since its format is very specific. This is a publication that's completely devoted to how Americans are managing their finances and their futures, and the editors are among the most least receptive we've encountered.

Sections New Media

News has some kind of new media tie-in, but with the focus on people managing their personal finances or on companies that offer safe, not risky, opportunities.
Editors Senior New Media Editor: Kevin McKean Fax: 212/522-0189

Days To Avoid
This is a monthly magazine so these editors aren't tethered to light or loaded days. McKean wants info. sent his way with a three-week lead time.
Methods McKean wants news faxed to him or sent by mail.
Comments McKean was rather abrupt when we reached him on the phone and told us very little that he gets from PR professionals is "useful." He said of about 1,000 pitches, maybe five or six will strike his fancy and whet his appetite to pursue a topic. Before you pitch an idea, pick up some recent issues and read, read, read.
Sections Stock Market, Economy

The focus here is blue-chip companies and why people should invest in them.
Editors Wall Street Editor: Michael Sivy Address: Time/Life Bldg.-Rockefeller Center, New York, N.Y. 10020, Room 3223

Days To Avoid
Once again, no good or bad days.
Methods Pitch Sivy by sending him no more than a one-page explanation. You're sure to ruin your chances of getting him to consider your pitch if you send him a release that's mass mailed
Comments There are four kinds of news Sivy wants: 1: A fresh argument for a blue-chip stock; 2: A pitch with a theme, such as now is the time to invest in the cable industry; 3: A story about some kind of investment approach; or 4: News that's pegged to research.
Sections Washington Bureau

How Washington politics and public-policy issues affect the American consumer.
Editors Bureau Chief: Ann Reilly Dowd Address: 1050 Connecticut Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20036-5314
Days To Contact/

Days To Avoid
Because this is a montly publication, there aren't any pressing deadline days - or easy days.
Methods Dowd wants to see pitches - in letter form - sent by general mail. Like other Money editors, she doesn't want a standard PR pitch, press kit or release.
Comments Dowd was emphatic about not receiving cold calls from PR types. She wants you to present a sound argument for why Money magazine would want to pursue the story and then let her make up her mind. She'll call you.
