Glamour's realistic coverage of the fashion world gives it the reputation as an advocate for women of any size, shape or style. "We want women to look great no matter what they look like," Fashion Director Cindy Weber Clearly says. Glamour covers only fashion news that is accesible to their readers, featuring clothes available nationwide. Keep this in mind when pitching stories, because Glamour won't take ideas for clothes sold only in the New York area.

SECTIONS: Fashion Watch: This two-page section looks at trends, people and new launches in the fashion world.

Fashion That Fits: This is a three-page section that details fashion ideas for any size woman -- from plus to petite.

EDITORS/LEAD TIME: Fashion Director: Cindy Weber Clearly, Fax: 212/880-8966, Phone: 212/880-8146 Lead Time: three months (at least)

METHODS: Clearly says if she doesn't know you or if it's a cold call, send a press kit. She works between 10 a.m and 5 p.m. and you can reach her during that time, five days a week by phone or fax. In either case, it's helpful to send pictures of your product.

COMMENTS: "I hope when people call me, the pitch is appropriate," Cleary says. Glamour's goal is to be realistic and provide readers with practical, useful fashion and beauty information.

A tip: a common mistake made by PR professionals is to pitch to the editor-in-chief, Ruth Whitney. However, this is the wrong avenue, as she does not accept story pitches.

SECTIONS: Beauty word of mouth: This is a promising section to pitch products because Glamour publishes pictures of featured products. The section includes small stories about breakthroughs in beauty. Stories/products must be innovative and important.

EDITORS/LEAD TIME: Senior Beauty Editor Charla Krupp Phone: 212/880-8211 Lead Time: three-four months

METHODS: Phone calls are acceptable to Krupp, and follow-up is important. "The volume of beauty products we get without follow-up calls is astounding. Call me and say, 'Did you get it? Did you like it?'" If not, it probably won't be noticed, she says.

COMMENTS: Krupp goes on "The Today Show" monthly to bring Glamour's featured products to life. For example, when Glamour featured Hard Candy's Glitter Eye Pencil in their April issue, it received a "tremendous response from our 800 number for the pencils. And glitter eye pencils aren't for everyone," Krupp says. The 800 number for each product is put on every page, not in the back of the magazine in small print, Krupp adds.
