Media Insight: Bloomberg News

Editor's Note: Because of its reputation and the scope of the business news it covers (overseas, emerging, initial public offerings, technology and institutional investors), it's worth establishing a working relationship with Bloomberg journalists. But tuck this tip away: Bloomberg's a rare breed and tracking down and getting in touch with editors and reporters at this media organization is a bear. Over the course of several days we placed several calls to eight of its editors or reporters and not one returned our calls (we tracked them down). Lesson learned: perseverance and patience count for everything here.

Sections N.Y. News Dept.

Bloomberg has a decentralized operation - certain news is handled out of its N.Y. office and other editorial control's relegated to journalists in Princeton. Here's a sampling of someof the stories it was on top of last week: Florida's governor trying to cushion the food-stamp loss; the MIR Station's dwindling water supply and Goldman Sachs reinstating GE to the recommend list.
Editors Assignment Editor: Jim Silver

Newsroom Fax: 212/893-5999

(Silver's the assignment editor for now but soon he'll be heading up the Latin American Desk which Bloomberg's in the process of setting up. For a while, however, he may be wearing both hats.)

Days To Contact/

Days To Avoid
There are no good or bad days or good or bad times. This is a 24-hour news operation and hundreds of stories are filed every day, with reporters penning several pieces during their shifts. Literally, news goes out every few seconds.
Methods Silver told us that this is a news operation that's mostly driven by faxes since they don't have time to wait for mailed press kits or other snail mail.
Comments Silver was one of two editors we were able to get on the phone so we consider his words manna from heaven: "We hear from people who are struggling to find even the slightest connection." He also told us that they often get a release that should have come their way a week earlier. For PR people, that's key: When you're dealing with a wire service, you don't have the luxury of sitting on news. (See the list below to target the proper editor/reporter.)

Days To Contact/

Days To Avoid
Once again, no good or bad days, no good or bad times.
Methods For these technology buffs, e-mail's the preferred route. Call first with an idea and then follow up with an e-mail but don't e-mail an entire press release. You can also try cold-call pitches if your news has some urgency attached to it but don't expect a call back unless it's something they want to pursue. They're not going to return your call to tell you, "Yes, I got your press release" or "Hey, thanks a bunch for thinking about us!"
Comments Editor Gail Roche leads this technology posse and was the other of two editors we were able to engage in a conversation. Her insight? Consider that Bloomberg focuses on publicly traded companies. Reporters/editors wouldn't just want a release about a new product - they would want to know how the new product's going to increase the company's market share and pit them against worthy opponents like IMB or Hewlett-Packard.
