CableFAX Daily

1201 Seven Locks Rd., Suite 300

Potomac, MD 20854-2958

CableFAX Daily highlights the latest news, trends and information about and for the cable industry five days a week in a bulleted format. Like its founder, cable guru Paul Maxwell, the publication has attitude and often provides stinging commentary on top cable news stories.

The 10-year-old Phillips International newsletter, which comes out on fax or email, also deals with broadband and technical issues. Its audience is high-level cable executives and decision-makers. Its sister publication, CableFAX magazine, comes out twice a year. The December issue is CableFAX 100, in which editors rate the top 100 players in the industry. The June issue of the magazine offers a roundup of the industry's most important stories, business deals, programs and parties. Both issues aim to maintain the bite and brevity of CableFAX Daily.

Pitch technical and broadband stories to Baumgartner for Tuesday's "Broadband Bulletin" page or Friday's "Programmer's Page." Baumgartner also handles Denver-based stories.

Smith (with Arenstein as a backup) does everything else except for programming and technology. This includes financial deals, regulations, international deals, carriage agreements, operator news, public affairs items and personnel announcements (only for high-level personnel, such as vice presidents).

Maxwell writes a Monday column, which is considered a must-read in the industry.

CableFAX Daily prints news that's "the first time," "the most watched," and "the big stuff." Small items, or, anything such as a tiny rise in the viewership of a particular network, will likely get cut to make room for information about the big movers and shakers.

It's a good idea to pitch at least two of the editors, for backup, Arenstein says. Like most editors, Arenstein appreciates pitchers who have read CableFAX before they pitch it.

CableFAX is written for insiders, which means it's sometimes tough for newcomers to understand it.

Arenstein is a junkie for freebies and his office is filled with gizmos. While sending him a cool toy does not guarantee your pitch will be published, he definitely appreciates it, and it has a good chance of making a special CableFAX magazine "tchotchkey items page," which is featured every year.
