Editor's Note: For newshounds worldwide, Reuters is a mainstay of their diets for news and information. (That's because journalists rely on wire services the way Liz Taylor relies on good divorce lawyers.) We were told that millions of words are fed to newsrooms every day, so we expected these venerable experts to be a little short-fused on a first approach. But they weren't. We were told that the wisest way to establish rapport with Reuters is to go straight to the writers who cover specific industries.

Financial News for the Americas News spans what's happening in the Amercias and the focus is stories that lend themselves to a financial spin. We're not only talking the obvious Wall Street hoopla but also major legal decisions and standard company earnings and loss reports | Financial Editor for the Americas, David Schlesinger, Fax: 212/859-1717 | Trying to determine when Reuters editors and reporters have light days is like expecting the news business to cease tomorrow. Given the nature of what these folks do, there isn't ever a true down time. They've got their noses on stories that touch on everything from politics in Washington, D.C., to conflicts overseas. | Send faxes. Snail mail - unless you're sending something that requires visuals to convey the story or you have factored in ample lead time - should be the last resort for sending your suggestion or backgrounder material. Some editors and reporters do prefer e-mail but it's not a reliance that's become "consistent" yet. | Typically, pitches and information should go directly to the folks covering the topic or niche you're pitching in. And Schlesinger shared this simple advice: "Give us just the facts please - we don't have a lot of time to be opening boxes and cutting ribbons and waiting for things to pop out." Also, Reuters journalists fact-check their own copy so they're depending on you to be a credible and timely source. Don't tell them you'll verify something and get back to them and then leave them hanging. |
Washington, D.C.,Bureau This is the Reuters clearinghouse for general news and anything and everything is covered, from the Aupair trial to the Clinton coffee fundraisers. Also coming out of this bureau site is news with a government/political edge. | News Editor for the Americas, Bern Debusmann, Fax: 202/898-8383 Street address: 1333 H. Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20005 | Once again, no good or bad days.. | Send faxes. Bern says the problem with snail mail is that there's an inherent delay that's built in. Initially, you should send a fax and then after you have a working relationship with the editor or writer who's covering your industry, chances are they'll want you to use e-mail as the primary delivery route | When we asked Debusmann what catches his news fancy, his answer revealed how much Reuters' receptiveness is connected to how well you do your jobs. "It depends on how it's presented and whether or not grasping the concept is time-consuming," Debusmann says. "We get lots of information that might otherwise have elicited some interest, but the news was buried deep down in the release." |
