Media Insight

In the last issue we looked at American Health For Women; this issue we've flipped the gender coin and targeted the editors of Men's Health, which reaches 1.2 million adult men (primarily 25-49 in the U.S.). This staff has a short fuse for phone pitches, "We would never accept a story idea over the phone," says Ron Geraci, assistant editor. To get their ear, it's best to send a brief release on health subjects that affect men most, like cholesterol, cancer and mental and physical stress. And preventive health tips - via surveys, research and trends - are always in high demand. ( Deadline for copy is four-to -ive months in advance for features and three-to-four months for hard news.)

General Health/ Quick Reads:

Men's Health approaches health with a "Just do it!" proactive tone and "in your face" wit. Recent health topics have offered tips on "checking up on your doctor," doing a "Two-minute stress test" and the "25 most stupid health ideas."
Assistant Editor: Ron Geraci Phone: 610/967-7807 Fax: 610/967-7725 menshlth@ msn.com Monday through Friday is generally good. His deadlines vary. Geraci prefers faxes. Phone calls are a nuisance and seldom get returned unless he's following up on a press release.

Geraci covers the short reads on health in the front of the magazine and the 1- to 3-page articles before the feature well. Health information on cholesterol, stroke, prostate cancer and improving sexual performance top the list of what Geraci is looking for now. He's also always looking for the latest studies that involve men's healthcare issues. He gets ticked off by phone calls and PR people who aren't familiar with the magazine's format and tone.
Health Features:
Fitness/preventive health editorial dominates the magazine's departments and features. Recently, the features included a "health bulletin" that gave the lowdown on safeguarding potency and beating blood pressure.
Senior Editor Greg Gutfeld Phone: 610/967-8210 Fax: 610/967-7725 Monday through Friday is generally good. His deadlines vary. Faxing is better than anything else. Emails don't work for Gutfeld.

Here, preventive health news is highlighted. The latest on low-fat, low-cholesterol diets are always given a high priority. Short informational health "bites" on foods and vitamins that increase energy and burn fat are also attention-getters. The staff are always on the lookout for leading dieticians and health/wellness centers that focus on men's health issues.
