American Banker

One State Street Plaza, New York, N.Y. 10004; ph: 212/803-8200

Editors at American Banker ask that PR practitioners study the daily's masthead before making a pitch. The paper covers the banking industry from several angles including consumer needs, corporate banking, technological innovations and regulatory issues. Its readers include executives from banks, technology companies and the government. Most importantly, the editors say, know who covers what and don't spam.

American Banker Online (http://www.americanbanker.com), the HTML extension of the print edition, features value-added services for subscribers including career search/career track information, technology stories not included in print, a Hot-off-the-Wire section from PR Newswire and others, daily industry update emails and a six-week archive search.

Editors: Editor, Matt Barthel, 212/803-8395, email: [email protected], Fax: 212/843-9600

Methods: Content is updated daily. "Everything goes online intact from the print edition," Barthel says. Ideas are filtered through print editors or Matt for the online edition. Matt is pretty easygoing - he'll take pitches in any form: phone, fax, mail or email.

Comments: When submitting a story idea or pitching, you'd better have an idea what American Banker covers. Barthel says, "I don't like getting stuff we don't cover." He went on to say American Banker doesn't cover all banking industry news.

American Banker follows community, regional and super-regional banking five days a week. Its pages are filled with news from banking technology to industry investments. The masthead can be used as a guide when pitching stories.

Editors: Executive/Managing Editor, Debra Cope, 212/803-8417

Methods: Voice mail is the best method to reach the editors. The staff prefers that you make contact with the top editors first. Put contact information at the beginning of your message.

Comments: "The best way to pitch a story is to call first," Cope says. All of the editors check voice mail before their daily mid-morning meeting around 11 a.m. Cope says communications directors would do well to know the rhythm of the news room. American goes to print at about 5:45 p.m. Brevity is best and be familiar with editors and the Banker's zone of coverage.
