Electronic Engineering Times/Civil Engineering Magazine

EE Times, 600 Community Drive, Manhasset, NY 11030

This weekly newspaper, publishing on Mondays, helps engineers and technical managers solve design problems for systems like desktop computers. The pitch opportunities are plentiful, as it includes product reviews, an op-ed page and a news section. Editors at the publication scored high for returning phone calls and spending time chatting about the pub. (Demographics: 94% of EE Times' readers are employed by original equipment manufacturers in the components, consumer electronics and telecommunications industries; more than one-third are employed by companies with annual sales over $1 billion; U.S. Circulation: 130,000).

Sections

News. Includes news, products and supersection with special feature stories. Recent stories: a feature about re-ordering static RAM memory chips for vendors; and a trends story about computer design problems for engineers.

Editors/Lead Time

Executive News Editor, Brian Fuller, e-mail: [email protected], Phone: 650/513-4324, Lead Time: at least one week

Methods

Fuller prefers e-mail for first contact and follow-up. But if you have breaking news, call him directly.

Comments

Don't ask Fuller, "why aren't you covering us this week?" Fuller says, "I must spend an extraordinary amount of time telling them [PR] what is the perfect story for EE Times." He prefers to "shoot the breeze" about the company and that "most always generates a good story."

Sections

Systems Design. Concentrating on special areas of engineering like systems design and communication systems, this section gives its readers information on how to design a whole system. Recent stories: a feature on Bell Lab engineers defining circuits.

Editors/Lead Time

Special Sections Editor, Chapppell Brown, e-mail: [email protected], Phone: 508/653-7826, Lead Time: two weeks.

Methods

Deadlines for Brown are every fourth week. Call him at the end of the week when he has more time to talk. E-mail is the best way to contact him, and seems to be the trend for all the editors.

Comments

If your PR pitches to Brown are general, they will not get placement, he says. "One of the reasons I ignore pitches is because they are not tailored to EE Times or my section." Don't pitch new products to Brown, who says he gets too many already.

Civil Engineering Magazine

Civil Engineering Magazine, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, VA 20191

Computers, shipping facilities and bridges: Civil Engineering, a monthly magazine that publishes at the beginning of each month, covers these wide ranging topics. Sections on new products, industry news and trends offer pitch opps. The editorial staff is small (about 10), so make pitches quick and specific. (Demographics: 41% of readers are from U.S. consulting engineering firms; 17% are engineers in government; Circulation: about 100,000).

Section

Features. This is the best area for placement because it includes both a "New Products," and a "Product Showcase/Reviews" section.

Editor/Lead Time

Editor-in-Chief, Virginia Fairweather, Phone: 703/295-6213. Lead Time: two weeks.

Methods Send her a press release with pictures of the product or to Madonna Aveni, products reporter. No faxes. For news articles, direct press releases to Fairweather by snail mail.

Comments

If you want coverage in Civil Engineering, pitch directly to Fairweather. Most ideas get forwarded to her and she finalizes all decisions. Recent stories: "NASA's Pretreatment Facility Uses Microfilters, Membranes," and "Stretching a Landfill."
