Know the Drill: Tips on Crisis Planning

As Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “Plans are nothing; planning is everything.” When it comes to crisis simulations, Peter Duda, VP and head of the corporate issues group at Weber Shandwick, should really like Ike. Crisis drills, says Duda, are key to the planning process, ensuring that the plan is up-to-date. Here are some tips from Duda on optimizing your crisis simulation results:

• Ensure everyone is actively engaged. People learn best by doing, and all trainees should have a defined role during the training.
• Make sure the simulation is “inline.” There is no crisis today that will not have a social media/digital component, so make sure the simulation hits both online and offline constituencies.
• Conduct a post-training review. Update your crisis procedures as necessary, and communicate the changes to all stakeholders.
