Although the Littleton, Colo., massacre continues to monopolize national headlines, the lifestyle section of The Denver Post doesn't want pitches based on that hook. (Editors note: We conducted a search last week on newsindex.com for "Columbine Shooting" and netted almost 600 results).

These editors are open to a wide array of lifestyle topics, from family issues and home and garden to the environment and hobbies. Make sure when pitching a national story to put a local twist on it by supplying editors with local experts and stats. This daily stand-alone section is a great venue for new lifestyle books, recipes and fun collectibles. The Star Wars craze, for instance, is commanding heavy-duty coverage, especially the movie's toys and collectibles.

Unlike most lifestyle sections, this one skews more male readers than female, so there are lots of opportunities to pitch guy hobbies and sports activities. Overall, the section tries to provide gender-neutral coverage. The best way to get on the radar screens of these editors is to fax or mail your pitches to Features Editor Cynthia Pasquale or Assistant Features Editor Linda Casterone.
