If you thought the easy-going attitude of the West Coast might open up your pitching doors, think again. Unfortunately, all you might find with editors from the San Francisco Chronicle is a hermetically sealed door. Apparently their "to-do" lists are as long as the Golden Gate bridge, because these editors have the attitude of a New Yorker on the subway.

Try targeting the paper's new business section, Entrepreneurs (Hot, 9/16), which covers small businesses in the Bay area. Section Editor Peter Stinton heads the editorial but prefers all PR execs to target the beat editors/reporters. Fax or e-mail is the only way to reach the business reporters. Unless your company is merging with Microsoft, skip the phone calls.

Editor Kathleen Pender oversees the entire business section. Again, faxes only to the business section at 415/543-2482. Pitch the following beat reporters: * Banking: Sam Zuckerman

Internet reporter: Jon Swartz; Digital TV: Dan Fost; Insurance: Rebecca Smith; Real Estate and Personal Finance: Arthur Louis; Retail, Advertising and Marketing: Carol Emert; Telecom and Networking: Deborah Soloman.
