Key Contacts: American Legacy

60 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 10011

It doesn't have to be Black History Month to craft pitches on African American culture. That's what Editor Audrey Peterson of American Legacy magazine says of this national quarterly about black history. She's looking for ideas year-round for this magazine, which relies mostly on freelancers. American Legacy is published by RJR Communications, Inc. and American Heritage, a division of Forbes. Each season Peterson devotes five large-scale feature articles - about 3,000 words - to stories about African American history and culture. In the last issue, a story about the history of ministry in black culture and a profile on a black designer ran.

Standing departments that are pitch-worthy include The Pathfinder, a profile on one significant individual in the black community; Flashback, a feature on a museum, show or some exhibit about black history; and Anthology, an excerpt from a book. Peterson is trying to increase her coverage of African American women in history and wants ideas to put together a special issue on the topic. All pitches by mail.
