Sony Camcorder Controversy: A Snapshot of Crisis Variance

More proof of the varied forms crises can take is the fresh controversy out of which Sony Electronics is digging itself. The company has been hit with queries about its new Handycam.

An unknown number (if tinkered with) have a "night shot" feature which allows the user to see through clothing with the aid of a filter, but the company's decided not to recall the approximately 1 million cam corders that have already been sold or are in the hands of retailers.

The company found out earlier this month about the unintended use after a story broke in a Japanese magazine and, since then, news bites have crept into the American media's coverage. Based on the press, the company has decided to remove the feature from its production line, but the company can't stop how buyers use the already released camcorders, says Rick Clancy, senior VP of corporate communications in the U.S.

"It wasn't intended for this purpose and we can't speak for how individuals use this," Clancy adds. Reports are that sales of the camcorder have exploded, but Clancy says Sony doesn't release its sales figures. (Sony, 201/930-6432)
