Google Gets More Social With New Commenting System

Google is about to launch a new commenting system that would integrate with Google+ as well as with its other Web services and Google search, according to tech Web site The Next Web. The system will also be available for use on third-party Web sites, making it a potentially viable alternative to Facebook’s current wide-reaching commenting system.

The most significant feature that comes with such a commenting system would be its availability for third-party sites. If Google can convince publishers to adopt its system over Facebook’s commenting system or over other alternatives such as those from Disqus and Livefyre, it would go a long way toward building out its presence within the social media landscape currently dominated by the trio of Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

For Web publishers, there is one major reason why a commenting system from Google would be attractive—Google search. The dominant search engine with a 66.4% market share, according to the latest comScore numbers, Google search picks up comments made through existing commenting services. If it was offering its own product within this particular online marketplace, there’s little doubt that a publisher’s use of Google’s commenting system could yield SEO benefits.

It may also give Google+ another (perhaps much-needed) boost. A widespread adoption of such a system would mean that users would be logged into their Google accounts for longer periods of time. And that, in turn, may lead users to spend more time on Google+.
