The scales are tipped toward Great Britain

as Southern Progress Corp., a subsidiary of Time Inc., begins publishing Weight Watchers U.K. The magazine represents Southern's expansion of the North American Weight Watchers pub franchise to include overseas markets.

Weight Watchers focuses on health and lifestyle issues with emphasis on beauty, fashion, fitness, and food, including low cal recipes, weight-loss success stories, fitness tips, and fashion and beauty scoops. The U.K. edition publishes eight times a year and has a paid circulation of 120,000, putting it among the U.K.'s top 100 consumer magazine titles.

"The U.S. version of the magazine certainly focuses more on exercise/health editorial and possibly more of a fashion element, whereas we feature more articles on food, celebrities, and success stories," says U.K. editor and publisher Pat Kane.

Editorial Director Barbara Raine-Allen says they love info from PR execs, especially exclusives. Send ideas on low-fat foods, beauty products, fashion and celebrity scoops. Explain in your pitch how it relates to readers in Britain. Contact Kane with any story ideas by phone at 011-44-0181-342-2222. Allow three months lead time. Raine-Allen prefers initial pitches by mail, fax or e-mail; follow up phone calls (same number as Kane) are okay. E-mail: [email protected]. The fax for both is 011-44-0181-342-2223.
