2012 Rising Stars of PR: Lauren Werner

Lauren Werner

Account Supervisor, Hager Sharp

The skills of a history major—including critical thinking, synthesis and context analysis—are a natural fit for translating challenging subject matter into consumer-friendly materials. Just ask former history major Lauren Werner. At Hager Sharp, Werner works primarily on developing outreach materials for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), otherwise known as The Nation's Report Card.

Werner met with teachers to figure out what they needed to learn about NAEP. The finished product is a four-minute video that takes an authentic, teacher-to-teacher approach to explaining the value of NAEP to teachers, with the goal of having them encourage their students to participate and to also raise awareness about the resources available to them online. The video is featured in the Best Practices Guide for Supporting Twelfth-Grade NAEP Participation, which goes to high schools that are selected to take NAEP, where twelfth-grade participation is particularly challenging. The video is also featured on the NAEP YouTube channel.

App she can’t live without: “
Instagram. I think it combines the best of Facebook and Twitter, and it’s a great way for me to stay in touch with my family members and friends who live far away.”

Inspiration in her PR career: “
My teammates. This is especially true at Hager Sharp, where my colleagues inspire me to think big, work hard and never deliver anything less than the best.”
