Fast Facts: Telecommuters on the Rise

If you're a PR practitioner charged with managing employee and internal communications, consider that the number of telecommuters is growing and approaching the number of self-employed Americans working out of their homes.

This fact should be worked into your corporate communications plan in the future.

That finding was based on a study conducted by Creamer Dickson Basford Research & Consulting Inc., Irvine, Calif. Telephone interviews were conducted during the last week of November 1996 with a national pool of 500 adults 18 and older.

According to the study, 40 percent of those working in their homes today are telecommuters.

The survey also revealed that the typical home worker is more likely to be male (55 percent versus 45 percent female) and between the ages of 25 and 34 (30 percent are age 25-34; 19 percent are age 35-44; and 17 percent are age 45-54).
