Family Circle

Editor's Note: With more than 5 million readers and 17 issues a year, PR professionals should include this publication as a pitch-list priority. If Family Circle journalists embrace your idea (hopefully backed by research and honed just for them), you'll be reaching more than the moms of America. Even though this magazine was designed for women, its content draws in men as well (one recent column provided tips on how to be a less-stressed-out parent - dads too!)

News
When it comes to Family Ciricle news, you'll come across everything from news blurbs about new products to stories about volunteer moms and home-decorating tips. This is a publication that's devoted to lifestyles so coverage is all over the place - one issue might delve into breakthroughs in treating diabetes; another, women who head businesses out of
their homes.
Deputy Editor Nancy Clark Address: 375 Lexington Avenue New York, N.Y. 10017 These magazine editors aren't tied into daily or weekly deadlines; however, they are locked into planning well in advance. Six to eight months before an issue hits the sales racks, these journalists are planning what's going in it. Generally, these editors want news/story ideas/profiles/product info. to come their way via regular mail. Much of what they do requires visuals and product sampling to get an accurate sense of what the article and accompanying layout should be. Press kits and gadgets are also welcomed. Clark says there are several rules PR types aren't paying attention to: Family Circle doesn't run stories with a celebrity focus, and seeking coverage for new fiction is also a Family Circle faux pas. You also need to keep in mind that there's a weeding out process: it's likely that an assistant will scan your pitch first - the intended editor may never see it if your suggestion isn't convincing. Most stories are generated in-house or by freelancers so your concept better be more interesting than it is self-serving!
Beauty & Fashion
Beauty and fashion news takes on many faces: hair, makeup, new products, hot colors, accessories, fashion trends and tips.
Beauty & Fashion Director Linda Moran-Evans Address: 375 Lexington Avenue New York, N.Y. 10017 Once again, no good or bad days - just a recognition that these folks are thinking about the winter holidays while you're still on your summer vacation and they're cooking up tropical drink concoctions while you're on the ski slopes. Send news via regular mail. (By the way, Moran-Evans hadn't heard the term "snail mail" so we're guessing that hip jargon and outlandish trends aren't smart ways of peppering your pitch with some additional perspective.) Moran-Evans receives about 200 to 300 pitches and/or releases a week and about 50 make it to the "consideration" pile after they're sorted into categories. Like Clark, she's working six months out. During our brief - but friendly - conversation with Moran-Evans, she shared some of her PR pet peeves with us: she doesn't want faxes unless there is an immediate spin, and she "hates" releases that arrive rolled up because she can't flatten them out for smooth stacking
