Study Shows 'Making it Work in the Workplace' Requires New Programs

More and more, internal communications and human resources divisions are finding themselves at the same table as companies hash out ways to reach employees and keep them happy. And one way of doing that means offering new programs such as telecommuting or cafeteria-style benefits, a new survey shows.

Catalyst's 1998 study, "Two Careers, One Marriage: Making it Work in the Workplace," helps communicators hammer out some specifics about employees' wants and what's realistic to deliver.

No surprise, coming out on top was flexible hours. Lowest on the list was elder care support. The study was based on a national phone polling of 802 members of two-career marriages.
