Cyber-Attacks Among Social Networks Increase

Social Cyber-Crime Climbs: Careful, your social media campaigns may get waylaid thanks to an increase in social network hacking. In a survey of 4,000 social network users, Webroot, an Internet security company, finds that security attacks through social networks are becoming more prevalent as the number of U.S. social networkers who experienced social network attacks climbed from 8% in 2009 to 18% in 2011. Also, social network users are becoming more careful; between 2009 and 2011, the number of U.S. social networkers who have never viewed or changed their privacy settings plummeted from 37% in 2009 to 8% in 2011.

Other findings include:

• 54% of respondents feel some level of addiction to their social network of choice.

• Millennials are the most addicted users, as 75% of people between the ages of 18 and 34 feel addicted, versus only 44% of older generations

• When asked if Mark Zuckerberg is responsible for keeping personal info safe on Facebook, 73% responded “No.”
