Charting the Industry: Salaries For Nonprofit PR Execs Up Slightly

PR pros who work for nonprofits, associations and NGOs (Non-governmental organizations) play a vital role for their brands. They do everything that their PR counterparts working for consumer or B2B brands do—cultivate sources in the media, drive the social media strategy and find new ways to get the message out—but often with much smaller budgets.

Their salaries also tend to be lower, but there are exceptions, of course. Base salary for communications managers working for nonprofits, associations and NGOs range from $30,000 to $69,000 (Fig. 1) for the bulk of managers, according to PR News’ 2013 Salary Survey, which covers the state of salaries, benefits and job satisfaction for communications professionals. The survey said that some managers garnered salaries ranging between $80,000 to $99,000, while a small percentage of managers (3.8%) commanded salaries above $100,000.

While the base salaries for PR pros working for nonprofits, associations and NGOs were pretty decent, bonuses were lacking in 2012. According to the survey, 65.5% of respondents said their organization had no bonus plan.

More than 60% of communications managers received salary increases of 1%-3% (Fig. 3) while more than 15% of respondents received salary increases between 4% and 6%. Communications managers cited media relations (65%) and writing chops (55%) as the top skills needed to advance within their organization. PRN
