Breast Cancer Campaign Targets Asian Women

Many Asian and Pacific Islander women believe they are not at risk for breast cancer. They couldn't be more wrong.

This month, an advertising campaign launched by the Los Angeles County Breast Cancer Early Detection Program and the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging will try to set the
record straight for this at-risk target. The campaign urges early detection through annual clinical breast exams and mammograms beginning at age 40.

The campaign will use multilingual broadcast and print ads to reach older Asian and Pacific Islander (API) women.

It will also be supported by multilingual brochures and posters that target API women enrolled in Medicare. The languages covered in the campaign are Mandarin/Cantonese,
Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino and English.

Breast cancer survivors are featured in the ad campaign and women who participated in focus groups helped shape the brochure and poster messages.

The campaign was produced by Healthier Solutions, a marketing firm in Los Angeles.

Breast cancer rates for Asian women living in the U.S. are much higher than they are in Asia, and it is the leading cause of death among older Asian women.
