Black Enterprise Magazine

130 Fifth Ave.

New York, NY 10011-4399

Tap into the business arena with Black Enterprise magazine, the monthly business pub for African Americans. Editors tell us PR folks must target seven specific areas of the magazine to get coverage - business and economic news, entrepreneurs, careers and professional development, consumers, professional self help/motivation, personal finance and technology. We've listed the editors below who take pitches for their individual departments. The editors, although difficult to contact, are open to most ideas. The magazine even has a section called, Do You Have A Story Idea, dedicated to telling PR practitioners who to contact for each section. (Demographics: male, 53.8%; median HHI, $62,400; median age, 41.4)

SECTIONS: TECHNOLOGY

Two technology areas comprise the features section: Technology and You and Consumer Technology. Also try pitching the department, Techwatch, which covers (among other topics) Web sites and business technology.

EDITOR/LEAD TIME: Technology Editor, Teriq Muhammad Phone: 212/242-8000, Fax: 212/886-9610, e-mail: [email protected]

Lead Time: one to two months

METHODS: E-mail is the best way to reach all editors. The standard e-mail is as follows: last name, first initial, @blackenterprise.com. For example, Business News Editor Eric Smith: [email protected]

COMMENTS: Unfortunately, the special technology issue published last month, but Muhammad says every issue covers the technology industry. Any ideas in the realm of Web sites, Y2K problems or high-tech investing will be considered.

There's no cookie-cutter formula for pitching. Editors suggest sending a quick e-mail with the idea and they'll return the thought with a "yea" or "nea."

SECTIONS: PERSONAL FINANCE

In January, Black Enterprise doubled its personal finance coverage. Two features each month will now be devoted to stories about investing or 401Ks.

EDITORS/LEAD TIME: Editor-at-Large, Derek Dingle Phone: 212/242-8000, Fax: 212/886-9610, email: [email protected]

Lead Time: one to two months

METHODS: Again, e-mail is best.

Also check out the extensive Web site, http://www.blackenterprise.com. The magazine's articles appear on the site and can be additional pitching opportunity.

COMMENTS: Stories with a "how to make money" focus will get play in the personal finance section. This business magazine is mostly aimed at entrepreneurs and therefore any stories about managing your money or doubling your personal savings account will make the grade.
