2012 Rising Stars of PR: Nicole Levins

Nicole Levins

Online Media Manager, The Nature Conservancy

Nicole Levins has been the force behind the significant online success of The Nature Conservancy's global spokespeople. Her work has led to dozens of media hits, new relationships and new engagement opportunities for The Nature Conservancy.

Her work has led to numerous hits in online outlets like Treehugger, USAToday.com and The Huffington Post and NationalGeographic.com. In addition to her media relations duties, she regularly contributes to The Nature Conservancy's Cool Green science blog. She also recently launched a reporter-focused Twitter account, @nature_press, which shares Nature Conservancy news, pitches and content.

In FY12, The Nature Conservancy "created" about 8% of its top-tier media coverage by securing guest-blogging and guest-contributing opportunities with top external online outlets. Levins is a central part of this process, with duties including ghostwriting, developing strategy, creating editorial calendars and processes, handling production, working with vendors and legal and coordinating activity across departments and divisions. With Levins’ help, fiscal year 2012's 83 guest-posts nearly tripled the previous year's 30.

App she can’t live without:
“Twitter for Android is one of the first apps I fire up each morning—to connect with friends, catch up on news and scout for potential Metro delays. I could certainly live without it if I had to, but it absolutely makes my life a little bit easier.”

Inspiration in her PR career: “
I'm fortunate to work for an organization that's driven by a mission I believe in, and I'm so inspired by my colleagues at The Nature Conservancy who work on on-the-ground conservation issues. Protecting the lands and waters on which all life depends—that's the hard job. Telling stories is relatively easy in comparison.”
