Winner: APCO Worldwide - The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia ‘Vaccines on the Go: What You Should Know’ Mobile Application
For parents, health workers and the broader population, identifying research-based, verifiable information about vaccines can be a significant challenge. In 2013, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s (CHOP) Vaccine Education Center (VEC), working with APCO Worldwide, resolved to combat this challenge by producing a mobile application that could serve as a central clearinghouse of fact-based information about vaccines.
The application is meant to be an intuitive resource for individuals with an interest in learning about vaccine safety, the recommended immunization schedule and other important health topics. APCO collaborated with CHOP to optimize the mobile application’s introductory information architecture, design framework and testing protocol.
APCO also supported CHOP in the initial marketing communications plan developed to support the application’s launch within the iOS environment in August 2013. Upon its availability through iTunes, the application premiered to overwhelmingly positive reviews from parents, researchers and science-based media. To date, CHOP and APCO have leveraged this favorable reception of the application as a springboard toward the development of an Android-ready version of the application, which debuted on Google Play in December 2013 and has since received numerous positive user reviews.
As of July 2014, the application has been downloaded more than 18,200 times through the iTunes platform and has received a rating of higher than four stars (out of a limit of five stars). The application has been downloaded more than 3,100 times through the Google Play Store and has received an average rating of 4.3 out of five stars. Collectively, the app has been downloaded more than 21,400 times. These metrics indicate a strong user preference for this application as a health information-based resource.
